More than ever, academics need to link finance with social and environmental goals. Now is the time to mobilise to define, promote and develop sustainable finance through teaching and research.

The University of Luxembourg, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research are celebrating the first anniversary of the Chair and Research Programme in Sustainable Finance.

Integrating ESG and CSR into teaching

The Luxembourg Chair and research programme contributes to a sustainable and inclusive economic system. It also exports scientific knowledge internationally and trains graduates in sustainable finance.

The Chair includes a Sustainable Finance track in the second year of the MSc in Finance and Economics. It is designed by academics and industry professionals with experience in modelling and managing sustainability risks, conducting ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) due diligence on investments and CSR (corporate social responsibility) reporting.

Stimulating research projects in sustainable finance

There are currently eight research projects underway. They cover diverse topics including ESG disclosure and financial reporting, measurement and management of carbon risk in mutual funds, and the risk and return of ESG investor activism.

Thanks to regular public conferences, the Chair will stimulate dialogue with financial and public stakeholders. Since the Chair’s inception in 2020, several virtual outreach events have taken place.

The Chair also promotes knowledge exchange. Indeed, international collaborations with stakeholder networks and partner institutions have emerged.

With this Chair, Luxembourg trains a new generation of leaders in sustainable finance, helping to ensure that the country’s financial hub remains at the forefront of innovation.

Chairholder in Sustainable Finance, Michael Halling joined the University of Luxembourg in 2021. His research ranges from empirical asset pricing and asset management, over empirical corporate finance and capital structure, to sustainable finance and fintech.
